Sofie 11th in GC at the Festival Elsy Jacobs

On Friday evening, our girls took off one by one for their prologue at Luxembourg. On the short 2,8 km course with a steep climb, Sofie De Vuyst put down the best time out of our six waowgirls. She completed her prologue in 4:24, 17 seconds down from the winner, leaving her in 20th position. Our other girls finished 56th (Daniela Reis), 68th (Flavia Oliviera), 92nd (Amélie Rivat), 103rd (Tara Gins) and 106th (Shana Van Glabeke).

In the first real stage, it was going up and down for 97,7 km. Still, the race ended in a bunch sprint with a group of about 30 riders that got away from the peloton. Sofie sprinted to a solid 9th place. She did lose 4 seconds though, due to a little gap in the sprinting bunch. Daniela (47th) and Flavia (64th) crossed the finish line in the big peloton and lost a little over five minutes. Tara, Shana and Amélie didn’t finish the stage.

Sunday’s 111,1 km stage was full of riding up and downhill again. Sofie De Vuyst was one of the many riders that tried to breakaway, but didn’t succeed. This time, it was a group of 36 riders charging towards the finish line and again, Sofie managed to cross the finish line in 9th position. Flavia, who was also part of this group, finished 15th. Daniela finished the race in 58th position in a large group at 9:32 of the winner.

In GC, Sofie De Vuyst obviously is our first waowgirl. She ends the Festival Elsy Jacobs in 11th position, 32 seconds down from GC winner Christine Majerus. Flavia Oliveira can be found in 40th place and Daniela Reis in 62nd place. The team also finished 10th in the teams classification.
